Web Clipping Service Clipboard Arrives On iPhone, Adds Shared Boards For Groups

Clipboard, the recently launched web clipping service with the Pinterest-like layout, is today debuting version 2.0, which brings a website redesign, several new features, and the debut of the Clipboard iOS application. The new app allows users to create and share their clips from their phone, as well as browse through the public clips from others on the service. Although designed for saving snippets of web content from mobile Safari, the app favors visual imagery when browsing through users' shares. This almost makes it seem more like a photo-sharing service than an Evernote competitor - at least at first glance.

Berlin twinkles in highest-res image

Researchers have stitched together a nighttime image of Berlin from above, which they say is the highest-resolution picture of a city at night. Ecologists have used the image to measure light pollution in the German capital.

The 878-megapixel picture, with one pixel per square meter, combines 2,647 aerial photographs taken from a research aircraft 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) above the city in September 2010, according to a statement from Freie Universit?t Berlin on Monday. Researchers from the university and their collaborators at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries analyzed the image to measure the amount of upward-directed light and to find patterns in its distribution in the city across various land uses.

More than a third of the light came from Berlin's streets, illuminated by auto headlights, streetlights and advertisements, the researchers reported in the November 2012 issue of the journal Remote Sensing of Environment. The researchers also found light was spread unevenly throughout the city. Natural areas, such as Grunewald and Tempelhofer Park, made up almost a third of the study area, but emitted only 6 percent of the total light.

Light pollution has been found to have serious environmental impacts. Beyond sucking up energy, excessive lighting can confuse migrating birds and exposure to light at night has been linked to depression and other health consequences in humans.

Ms. Couric will?also introduce a segment called ?YOLO? (You Only Live Once), as she takes a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with racecar driver Danica Patrick.

Later segments?include a bucket list of to-dos, and ?Women Who Should Be Famous.?

?Katie? ? broadcast live from New York with a studio audience ? will be aired at 3 p.m. in most markets,?produced and distributed by Disney-ABC. Couric also has a separate deal to appear occasionally on ABC News.

The answer to how well this show does will say a lot about American TV, changing audience tastes, talk show hosts, ratings, and network income, analysts say. ?

After 15 years at NBC?s ?Today Show? and five years as anchor and news director of ?The CBS Evening News,? can Couric?s combination of personality, perkiness, and gravitas draw viewers, especially in a schedule jammed with alternatives? Those will include former ?Survivor? host Jeff Probst, comedian Steve Harvey, Britain?s Trish Goddard, and the return of veteran Ricki Lake.

Some suggest the answer may not say anything about Couric?s abilities at all.

?Maybe there is a saturation point that will nullify her success, which has nothing to do with her intrinsic qualities,? says Len Shyles, professor of communication at Villanova University. ?Steve Harvey, Maury Povich, The View, The Five, Dr. Phil, Morning Joe, Imus on cable, The Today Show, Kelly Ripa. On and on. The glut is obvious. She will likely fail, not because of her, but because of the nature of the beast.?

Mr. Shyles and others feel the TV landscape has changed so much that the field is wide open for a pioneer to reinvent the afternoon talk show genre.

We've spilled a lot of ink on Millennials and their aversion to buying cars. Some data indicates that folks born between 1981 and 2001 are so un- and under-employed that their parents?are the only ones who can afford to shop the showrooms. Other studies suggest that Gen Y finds?driving to be a distraction?from other noble pursuits, like, you know, text-messaging.?

Today, Bloomberg posted some interesting statistics that both verify and complicate those theories. For example:

• Shoppers between the ages of 18 and 34 make up just 11% of today's auto market -- down from 17% in 2007, prior to the Great Recession.
• In 1983, roughly 92% of Americans between the ages of 20 and 24 had driver's licenses. As of 2010, that figure had dipped to 81%.
• Before the recession, college graduates landed entry-level salaries of about $30,000. Post-recession, the number has drifted closer to?$27,000.
• Renting is hugely popular among Millennials: in the housing market, rental vacancy rates hover near historic lows. (This may explain the popularity of rental car services like Zipcar.)

Another crucial fact that bears mentioning is the increasing rate of urbanization in the U.S. In 2010, 81% of Americans lived in urban areas, and that figure has been growing.

What's it all mean?

The auto industry is going to have an increasingly tough time selling cars to young people -- even when they design those cars with young consumers in mind. That's because automakers have been hit by a perfect storm of unfortunate events:

• America's recovery from the Great Recession has been touch-and-go, hampered largely by economic troubles in Europe (though China has begun slipping, too). As a result, young people -- even college grads -- are having a tough time getting their financial footing, which puts a damper on their ability to buy big-ticket items like automobiles.
• As more people move to urban areas, car ownership becomes increasingly unnecessary. After all, why would anyone shell out for an automobile -- and a place to park it -- when there's decent mass transit available, as there is in many cities??
• Smartphones and other mobile devices have given young people new ways to connect. Millennials don't need to travel to interact face-to-face:?they can chat online or by text message. There's anecdotal evidence to suggest that this is having an effect on bars and nightclubs, so it's not unreasonable to think that cars may be affected, too.

So, the $64,000 question is: how does the auto industry adapt to meet these changing conditions?
