Cornell University to install nets on bridges in bid to prevent suicides

Published August 19, 2012

Associated Press

Cornell University in New York plans to begin installing nets on several bridges over gorges where three students jumped to their deaths in 2010.

The Ithaca Journal reports that the town of Ithaca and the Ivy League school have reached an agreement that calls for installing nets on five bridges.

The three students committed suicide by jumping from bridges within a month of each other. According to the newspaper, 27 people committed suicide between 1990 and 2010 by jumping from the bridges, including 15 students.

The school has long been haunted by a reputation for suicides. Cornell maintains its suicide rate over time is normal for colleges.

Fences were erected after the 2010 suicides.

Some nets will extend about 15 feet out from the bridges. Installation is to start Monday.

Insurer Aetna to buy Coventry Health for $5.6 billion

(Reuters) - Insurer Aetna Inc said it will buy rival Coventry Health Care Inc for $5.6 billion in cash and stock to boost its share of government business and benefit from U.S. healthcare reforms.

The U.S. healthcare reform aims to provide coverage for 16 million more Americans through privately run health insurance exchanges in each state, and will expand Medicaid eligibility for an additional 16 million people by raising limits on household income.

The acquisition of Coventry will help Aetna lift its share of revenue from its government business to over 30 percent from 23 percent.

It will help Aetna add nearly 4 million medical members and 1.5 million Medicare Part D members. Medicare Part D is a federal program that reduces prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries.

"Integrating Coventry into Aetna will complement our strategy to expand our core insurance business, increase our presence in the fast-growing government sector and expand our relationships with providers in local geographies," Aetna's CEO Mark Bertolini said in a statement.

DEAL DETAILS

Aetna will pay $27.30 in cash and 0.3885 shares for each Coventry share held, a total value of $42.08 per share, Coventry and Aetna said in a joint statement.

The deal is at a 20.4 percent premium to Coventry's Friday closing stock price of $34.94.

Shares of Coventry rose above the offer price, gaining 21 percent to $42.15 in premarket trade on Monday.

Including the assumption of Coventry debt, the sale is valued at $7.3 billion, the companies said.

Aetna said it expects to finance the cash portion of the transaction with a combination of cash on hand and by issuing about $2.5 billion of new debt and commercial paper.

The deal is expected to add modestly to Aetna's operating earnings per share in 2013, 45 cents in 2014 and 90 cents in 2015.

Aetna's shares closed at $38.04 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

In July, health insurer WellPoint Inc said it would buy rival Amerigroup Corp for $4.46 billion, nearly doubling its Medicaid business.

Last October, Cigna Corp agreed to buy HealthSpring Inc for $3.8 billion to strengthen its Medicare business.

Border Patrol K9 team volunteers at Calexico Animal Shelter

CALEXICO ? On a regular day, Border Patrol K9 handler Tony Camarena employs his assigned dog to secure the border through heat and cold.

On Saturday, Camarena decided to use his dog-handling expertise at the Calexico Animal Shelter for another altruistic mission: caring for rescued dogs.

?I love animals ? except snakes,? Camarena said jokingly just after cleaning a dog kennel.

This is the first time that Camarena and other Border Patrol K9 handlers volunteered at the shelter, he said, and there?s a benefit in having the handlers involved in the effort, he suggests.

?I?m not afraid to approach a dog,? said Camarena.

But dogs at the Calexico Animal Shelter aren?t difficult to approach.

In fact, they all seemed eager to interact with handlers like Sonny Villareal, who walked, played with and bathed dogs.

?The vast majority of the dogs are sociable,? Villareal said as he prepared to bath one of the many dogs that are kept in the shelter.?

The goal of volunteering at the shelter is to give back to the community as an outreach effort, he said, and pointed out that Diana Daniels ? another Border Patrol agent ? was the one who invited him to volunteer.

Villareal then invited the K9 handlers and that?s how this volunteering effort came to be, he said.

?Dog on the loose,? said someone shortly after and then a dog the size of a Chihuahua was seen running through the kennels.

The dog was named Flash by some of the agents who were able to catch it soon after.

It was a clearly a joyful moment for the volunteers present.

Border Patrol K9 Coordinator Jose Montes, who ultimately got a hold of Flash, bathed it with the help of Border Patrol Deputy Chief Roy Villareal.

?We are all animal lovers,? said Roy Villareal. Border Patrol interacts with dogs so often that it ?is part of who we are and what we do.?.?

And indeed they have plenty of dogs.

The local Border Patrol has about 47 dogs, said Montes, who since becoming a supervisor had to relinquish having an assigned dog.

And he misses having an assigned dog, he said, although he noted that he has his own retired dog at home.

This is because agents are allowed to keep a retired dog, which is usually retired after five to eight years of service, said Camarena, who added that it?s not uncommon for agents to keep their assigned dog.

?All these guys really get attached with the dogs,? he said.?

In the case of Montes, his dog is growing old and soon he?ll have to look for another one.

Now that he?s seen the dogs at the Calexico Animal Shelter, Montes said there?s no way he?ll get a dog from a shop but instead, he?s looking forward to get a rescued dog.

For more information about the Calexico Animal Shelter and about adopting a dog contact the Calexico Animal Control office at 760-768-1861.

PFT: Replacement refs make major blunder

Jacksonville Jaguars v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

NFL coaches can be big jerks.? Sean Payton is an NFL coach.? Thus, Sean Payton can be a big jerk.

That pretty much summarizes the latest Outside The Lines report regarding the Saints, from ESPN?s John Barr.

We?ve heard the stories over the years.? Payton can be arrogant and vindictive and mean spirited when dealing with the media.? And, yes, he has done some things that are over the top ? as his one-year suspension confirms.

So have other coaches.

It doesn?t make it right.? But it goes with the territory.? And it flows from the physical, rough-and-tumble nature of the sport.

?He wanted every player on the team to have swag,? former Saints defensive end Charles Grant said of Payton.? ?Even if you was in the front office, he wanted you to have swag.?

The Saints have dealt with a series of problems in recent years, many of which flow from the fact that former employees (who possibly didn?t have enough ?swag?) are sufficiently unhappy with the team to file lawsuits and talk to reporters and, in the case of the bounty investigation, blow the whistle to the league.? This means that, at one or more levels, the Saints have a chronic people problem that they need to solve.

The Saints also made the poor decision (and they?ll surely admit it in hindsight) to associate with Mike Ornstein, who as we?ve been told even had a locker at the team?s facility.? ?We were trying to get rid of him,? an unnamed league official told Barr regarding Ornstein, ?because frankly he?s a cancer.?

If the league office had been trying to get rid of Ornstein, they didn?t do a good enough job of it.? And the common theory in league circles is that, if/when Ornstein becomes sufficiently disgruntled with the league office, he could bring others down with him.

During the report, Barr explained that he received a ?threatening phone call from an anonymous caller wondering why were were out to dig up information about the Saints.?? Bensel said it was later determined that the call came from team spokesman Greg Bensel?s cell phone.? Bensel denied to Barr that Bensel made the call, and Bensel didn?t say who had.

Of course, Barr didn?t mention ? at all ? his apparent swing and a miss regarding the report that G.M. Mickey Loomis had the ability in 2002 to eavesdrop on opposing coaches.? It?s possible that the ?threatening phone call? came at or about the time Barr dropped that misplaced bombshell, and it?s believed within the Saints organization (we?re told) that the Loomis story was all Barr could find after being sent to New Orleans to somehow, some way advance the ball on a bounty story that had percolated for two years, right under the noses of ESPN?s journalistic army.

Barr also didn?t say how the call was ?threatening.?? What was the specific threat?? No more access for ESPN?? Physical violence?? Possible dumping into a cold tub?

It?s almost as if the reporting has become personal.? That ESPN is playing the ?don?t mess with the guy who buys his ink by the truckload? card.

Yes, that?s a real dynamic in the media.? And it?s important for media outlets to try to strike the right balance between editorial decisions based on whether the story is truly newsworthy or whether, as in this case, ESPN simply wanted to give the Saints a taste of their own medicine.

Mysterious snake disease decoded

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? A novel virus has been identified as the possible cause of a common but mysterious disease that kills a significant number of pet snakes all over the world, thanks to research led by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) -- and three snakes named Juliet, Balthazar and Larry.

The virus, previously not thought to infect snakes at all, appears to cause "inclusion body disease." Long the bane of zoo officials and exotic pet owners, the deadly illness spreads among boas and pythons in captivity, causing micro clumps of clustered proteins to form inside the snake, leading to bacterial infections, neurological problems, anorexia and withering, leading to death.

The new work, described this week in the American Society for Microbiology's new open-access journal mBio, paves the way toward developing diagnostics and treatments, which may make it possible to eradicate the disease from snake collections worldwide.

"It's a devastating disease when it gets into a collection, zoo or aquarium because it's essentially fatal every time," said Joe DeRisi, PhD, the senior author of the study, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator (HHMI) and vice chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF.

Surprisingly, he said, the cause of the illness appears to be a completely new set of viruses of a type known as an arenavirus. The discovery came as a complete a shock to the team of scientists because, while arenaviruses are common in rodents and cause extremely nasty infections in other mammals, nobody knew they could infect reptiles.

"Now we have found that they infect snakes, as well," said Mark Stenglein, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at UCSF who is the first author on the paper.

Stenglein, DeRisi and their colleagues isolated at least two strains of the arenaviruses from half a dozen snakes afflicted with inclusion body disease. They could find no traces of the same viruses in snakes that were free from disease.

Arenaviruses infect mostly rodents but occasionally people, and can cause fatal hemorrhagic diseases like Lassa fever, which kills thousands of people every year in Africa. There is no evidence, however, that a snake has ever transmitted an arenavirus infection to a person despite the fact that snake owners and veterinarians handle infected snakes all the time, said DeRisi.

Three Snakes That Shook the World

For years, many experts have hypothesized that a virus or some other infectious pathogen might cause inclusion body disease because of evidence that it spreads easily from snake to snake. No definitive cause has been identified until now, and the discovery may never have occurred if not for a random sequence of events, including cases of inclusion body disease in an aquarium collection, a friendly DNA sequencing competition among scientists, a postdoctoral researcher who was looking for a project, and a snake owner worried about her favorite pet.

The story began with a snake named Larry, and his owner, Taryn Hook of San Jose, California. Before Larry, Hook had lost two snakes to inclusion body disease, and, in early 2009, she became convinced Larry had it as well. He was developing bacterial infections similar to what Hook had seen with her two other snakes. Knowing there was no treatment or cure, she was desperate to find anyone who might save her snake.

Hook took Larry to see the exotic pet veterinarian Chris Sanders, DVM, owner of the nearby Wildwood Veterinary Hospital. Sanders had just attended a conference at which he had heard DeRisi talking about his Virochip DNA microarray technology and its ability to identify viruses, fungi and other pathogens -- including at least one exotic pet disease, a mysterious parrot virus -- when no other gene probing technology could. The parrot virus was discovered by DeRisi and Don Ganem, MD, at the time an HHMI investigator and professor of microbiology and medicine at UCSF, in 2008.

Could DeRisi help save Larry the snake as well? Sanders suggested to Hook she had nothing to lose by asking.

DeRisi was in his office one morning in early 2009 when he spied a hand-written letter in his stack of daily mail. Inside was a plea from Hook describing Larry's illness. She had heard he had found the cause of a mysterious parrot disease. Would he do for snakes what he did for parrots? She enclosed a picture of herself with Larry.

Having never heard of the disease, DeRisi set the letter aside and it was lost under a pile of paper. Only months later, while cleaning his office, did he stumbled across it again. He was about to toss it away, but in scanning the letter again he noticed Hook mentioned the local exotic pet veterinarian Sanders. So he called, they spoke, and DeRisi decided to take on the project.

"It satisfied all the criteria as an interesting disease," DeRisi said. But first he had to find samples to test from infected snakes.

Around the same time, inclusion body disease was diagnosed in a snake at the Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Also discovered were snake mites, which are believed to be a possible vector for passing the disease from snake to snake.

Academy veterinarian Freeland Dunker decided to test all of the boas exposed to the infected snake for the disease -- a complicated procedure requiring a surgical biopsy of the liver. He discovered a few more were infected, and all of them had to be euthanized to prevent any spread of the disease. Dunker asked his pathologist, Drury Reavill DVM if she knew of any current research being done on inclusion body disease for which tissues from the euthanized snakes could be used. As it turned out, Reavill had already been in touch with DeRisi's group and knew they were looking for samples.

The effort to find the virus went into overdrive after Stenglein joined the DeRisi laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow and took on the project. But before he and DeRisi could find traces of the virus they needed to know the sequence of the boa constrictor genome so they could distinguish snake DNA sequences from viral sequences in the diseased animals. The problem was that there were no snake genomes available.

Thus, their first step was to sequence the entire boa constrictor genome, and they had to start with a snake that they were sure was free of inclusion body disease. At the Academy, Dunker helped in this effort by collecting blood from a boa constrictor named Balthazar, an education animal which was housed separately, had no contact with the rest of the boa snake collection and tested negative for the inclusion body disease.

Substantial help in the sequencing effort came from scientists participating in a friendly competition called the Assemblathon 2, which was sponsored by UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. Balthazar's DNA was sequenced and a number of groups around the country competed to build (assemble) the most complete genome sequence possible using the raw data.

Characterizing Balthazar's genome paved the way for finding the arenavirus in the midst of millions of other sequences of the snakes' DNA. This "needle in the haystack" problem was solved using custom software written in the DeRisi lab, and made available for free on his website.

This is where the shock came.

The team found two arenavirus strains in the snakes -- a surprise in itself; but in addition, they observed that theviruses did not look like your ordinary arenaviruses. They looked like distant relatives of other arenaviruses but had protein coats that were more similar to those of Ebola viruses. Like arenaviruses, Ebola virus can cause fatal hemorrhagic fever when transmitted to humans. Neither of those viruses has ever been known to infect reptiles, and although it had been postulated that they share a common ancestor, no such virus linking them had ever been discovered.

Once the virus was computationally identified, the team had to find a way to grow the virus so that it could be studied further. Because the virus infects boa constrictors, the ideal way to grow it, the team reasoned, would be to infect boa constrictor cells, but no such cell line existed. So DeRisi and Stenglein turned to a third snake, named Juliet.

Juliet was a red tailed boa owned by Chris Sanders, who'd had her since his days as a young veterinary student. She was about 20 years old when Balthazar's genome was being assembled and was dying of lymphoma. When she ultimately succumbed to the cancer, Sanders harvested her kidneys and the DeRisi laboratory was able to use them to make a boa constrictor cell line.

The scientists took virus from diseased snakes, added it to Juliet's kidney cells growing in petri dishes and showed that the snakes accumulated exactly the same "clumps" of proteins as had been observed in the sick snakes from the Academy. Antibodies raised against the virus showed that these clumps were formed from arenavirus protein, further strengthening the association of this new virus and the deadly disease.

In solving this longstanding veterinary mystery and setting the stage for treatments, vaccines, and perhaps even eradication of this disease, the scientists also discovered an unexpected new branch of virus biology: The viruses they found appear to be a combination of arenaviruses and filoviruses, neither of which has been known to infect reptiles.

In addition to the authors from UCSF, authors of this study are affiliated with Wildwood Veterinary Hospitals in Portola Valley, CA; Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Zoo/Exotic Pathology Services in Sacramento, CA; and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

This work was supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institutes of Health through grant # 5T32HL007185-34, and PSWRCE, NIH grant U54 AI065359.

Iran asks Turkey, Qatar to help free pilgrims seized in Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - Tehran has asked Turkey and Qatar to help secure the release of 48 Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in the Syrian capital Damascus, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

The Iranian pilgrims were seized after visiting a popular Shiite shrine in Damascus on Saturday by an armed group.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Qatari counterpart Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani agreed to help seek the pilgrims' release during separate phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, IRNA reported.

Several Iranians have been abducted in Syria since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began 17 months ago, and many have been released to Turkish authorities before returning to Iran, according to Iranian media.

Five Iranian engineers kidnapped in Homs in December were freed last month, and a more pilgrims were snatched in January and February. Most have been released, Iranian media reported.

The bulk of the Syrians seeking to topple Assad belong to the Sunni Muslim majority, while Assad comes from the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam which is the main religion of Iran.

Tehran has criticized Turkey and Qatar for helping rebels fighting to topple Assad, a close ally Iran has praised for promising political reforms.

Tens of thousands of Syrians fled the fighting to mainly Sunni Muslim Turkey and the nominal commander of the Free Syrian Army, a loosely coordinated group of insurgents fighting Assad's forces, is also based there.

Syria has accused Qatar's Sunni Muslim rulers of funneling weapons and money to the rebels, which Damascus describes as terrorists.

Asian shares, euro rose on U.S. jobs, hopes for Europe action

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares and the euro rose on Monday as a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data and emerging optimism for European action on the debt crisis lifted risk appetite, although caution remains until concrete steps are taken, which may be weeks away.

Investors will be looking to data from China starting Thursday, from trade to bank loans and investment, to give the global economy a further lift.

China's central bank on Sunday pledged to intensify monetary policy fine-tuning and improve credit policy to bolster the world's second largest economy.

With the euro zone debt crisis crippling global economic activity, Southeast Asia's largest economy, Indonesia, will likely report its second quarter gross domestic product grew 6.1 percent on Monday, indicating its sizzling economy is starting to cool and show dents in its resilience to a global slowdown.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> rose 0.7 percent, and Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> opened 1.5 percent higher. <.t/>

The euro gained 0.4 percent to $1.2438 its highest in a month, while the dollar was at 78.54 yen, off a two-week high of 78.77 hit on Friday when weakening safe-haven demand weighed on the yen.

A rebound in riskier assets improved sentiment in Asian credit markets, narrowing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 4 basis points.

Better than expected U.S. jobs data spurred unwinding of safe-haven holdings in treasuries and the dollar while boosting U.S. and European equities and oil on Friday.

European shares rose to four-month highs on Friday and the euro surged as investors re-evaluated the European Central Bank's statement after its policy meeting on Thursday which hinted at upcoming policy steps to contain surging borrowing costs in Spain.

"We believe the rate sell-off on Friday is unlikely to continue, as we see this market trading range-bound until concrete news out of Europe emerges," Barclays Capital analysts said in a research note, referring to the selling of safe-haven government bonds on Friday.

"We think the likelihood of further central bank moves remains high, particularly in Europe ... this bodes well for risk," they said, adding that while the euro can still rise on short covering, a lower euro will be part of the European policy mix and thus would look to fade out the rally.

Oil eased after rallying on Friday, with Brent down 0.2 percent at $108.63 a barrel and U.S. crude futures down 0.3 percent at $91.17 a barrel.

A rebound in riskier assets improved sentiment in Asian credit markets, narrowing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 4 basis points.

As risk aversion abated, the CBOE Volatility index <.vix>, which measures expected volatility in the Standard & Poor's 500 index <.spx> over the next 30 days, plunged 11 percent to close at 15.64 on Friday. Some analysts cautioned that the VIX nearing the 13.70-15.30 area of support has always provoked at least an interim reversal in trend.

U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose the most in five months, but a rise in the jobless rate left most economists still expecting further monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve as soon as September.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann told a newspaper that he thinks German Chancellor Angela Merkel will drop opposition to measures such as giving the euro zone's permanent bailout fund a banking license if that is what is needed to save the euro.

Spain's economy minister told a newspaper on Sunday Madrid has time to wait for clarity on what a full European rescue would involve as it has already covered the majority of its debt needs for the year. On Friday, its prime minister had signaled that he may seek an aid package.

Greece, which faces a 3.2 billion euro bond maturity on August 20, is leaning towards issuing treasury bills to plug a cash squeeze this month, its deputy finance minister said.

Greece's international inspectors said they will return in September for a final verdict as they said Athens, while making progress in finding budget cuts needed to continue its bailout program, has not done all work.

Islamists kill 15 Egyptians, Israel strikes attackers

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist gunmen killed at least 15 Egyptian policemen and seized an army tank in an assault on a Sinai police station near the border with Israel on Sunday, the deadliest attack in the region in at least two decades.

The attack, which saw Israeli aircraft destroy a vehicle used by the gunmen to try to storm the fortified border, was the first major security emergency for Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, who summoned his military council.

Egyptian state television and Israeli military officials said an Islamist militant group was responsible for the assault.

Israel has previously accused Palestinian militants in Gaza of involvement in militant activity in Sinai, where insecurity has spread since the U.S.-aligned Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, was toppled by a citizen revolt last year.

Sunday's attack will force Egypt and Israel to engage at a time when both are still in the process of recalibrating their relationship after Mursi, an Islamist, assumed office at the end of June. It may also test Egypt's relationship with Hamas, the rulers of the Gaza Strip, if it is shown that Palestinian gunmen were involved.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Thanks to the determined action of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) and the Shin Bet (internal security agency), a big attack against Israeli civilians was prevented."

The Egyptian state news agency quoted a security official as saying the attack was carried out by militants who infiltrated from Gaza via a tunnel as well as by other militants from two regions in Egypt's Sinai peninsula.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak called for "determined Egyptian action" to "prevent terror in Sinai".

"Elements of a jihad organization drove SUVs into one of the checkpoints south of the Rafah border," Egyptian state television said. It said 15 security forces personnel had been killed and at least 7 wounded.

It was not clear how many attackers were involved.

"There was an exchange of fire with the attackers who seized an army tank and used it to make a second attack in Rafah," the Egyptian television report said.

Israeli military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said gunmen had seized two vehicles. One exploded and the second was destroyed by Israeli aircraft.

"As of now, we know of no terrorists still in the area. There are some Israeli communities nearby, and residents have been asked to stay in their homes."

An Egyptian security source said the Rafah border crossing with Gaza had been closed "indefinitely" after the attack.

FORTIFIED BORDER TRIANGLE

In a statement, a spokesman for Netanyahu said: "The terrorists who killed the Egyptian security men seized two Egyptian military vehicles and tried to storm the Israeli border."

He said the vehicle that tried to breach the border was destroyed at the Kerem Shalom crossing into the southern Gaza Strip, a military zone where the borders of Israel, Egypt and Gaza intersect.

A television journalist based in North Sinai said the area was sealed off by Egyptian security forces, who had blocked the road from the main town of al-Arish in the direction of the Gaza border crossing at Rafah.

Earlier on Sunday, an Israeli air strike killed a Palestinian gunman from a radical Islamist group and wounded another as they rode a motorbike in southern Gaza near the Egyptian border.

It was not immediately possible to confirm whether the incidents were linked.

Gaza is governed by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist movement which, while also hostile to the Jewish state, is considered too moderate by many Salafis and has at times clashed with them during law and order drives.

Hamas condemned the attack and closed the tunnels to Egypt through which it smuggles goods to avoid an Israeli-Egyptian blockade. Residents said the atmosphere was tense.

Coroner: Columbus Crew midfielder Urso has died

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:34 a.m. ET Aug. 5, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso died Sunday morning at a central Ohio hospital, and no cause of death has been determined, a county coroner said.

Urso, 22, was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m. at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Franklin County Coroner Dr. Jan Gorniak said. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Urso played in six games this season and was sidelined by groin surgery in May. Urso was not with the team Saturday for its 1-0 loss to D.C. United in Washington, team spokesman Marco Rosa said.

The team withheld detailed comment, and the hospital said privacy laws ruled out any comment.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Columbus Crew and Hunt Sports Group are with the Urso family in this time of need," a team statement said.

Urso was in his first season with the Crew. In a team profile last month of Crew rookies, he said he was frustrated with injuries.

"To go from getting picked up late in the draft, to starting and contributing, and then to be out completely and hurt - it's really frustrating. Injuries are just a part of (soccer)," he said.

A native of Lombard, Ill., Urso played on North Carolina's NCAA title-winning team last fall and for the U.S. under-17 World Cup team in 2007.

With the NCAA title, Urso said it helped erase years of frustration for him and the other UNC seniors.

"My whole college career has been awesome, but there was something extra about this team," Urso said. "To cap it off with this is something I'm going to remember the rest of my life."

Shadow REO: Estimates Suggest as Many as 90% of Foreclosed ...

Posted July 13, 2012 By Teke Wiggin, AOL Real Estate

Shadow REO

A pretty, manicured home sits six doors down from Phil Faranda?s in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.

To look at it, most passersby would think that the tidy house is occupied by a nice family that gives it a good amount of TLC:? the lawn is mowed, the bushes trimmed and the siding has what looks like a fresh paint job.

But Faranda knows better.

The bank-owned house (pictured above) has been vacant for 18 months, according to Faranda, a Realtor specializing in distressed properties.? Just two notices taped to a window are the only indications that the home is unoccupied.

shadow REO

It might seem curious that such a well-maintained home doesn?t have a For Sale sign on its front yard.? But it?s certainly not unusual.

This home is part of what?s known as the ?shadow REO? inventory:? repossessed homes across the country that banks or investors often purposely keep off the market. ?The practice isn?t a secret, and refraining from dumping a large inventory of foreclosures on the market helps to keep home prices from crashing.

But the extent to which lenders keep their stock of REOs ? industry parlance for ?real estate owned? properties ? off the market may be much larger than most people think.

As many as 90 percent of REOs are withheld from sale, according to estimates recently provided to AOL Real Estate by two analytics firms.? It?s a testament to lenders? fears that flooding the market with foreclosed homes could wreak havoc on their balance sheets and present a danger to the housing market as a whole.

Online foreclosure marketplace RealtyTrac recently found that just 15 percent of REOs in the Washington, D.C., area were for sale, a statistic that is representative of nationwide numbers, the company said.

A Liability to Lenders

Analytics firm CoreLogic provided an even lower estimate, suggesting that just 10 percent of all REOs in the country are listed by their owners, which include mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as the Federal Housing Administration.? As of April 2012, 390,000 repossessed homes sat in limbo, while about 39,000 were actually listed for sale, said Sam Khater, senior economist at CoreLogic.

Daren Blomquist, vice president of RealtyTrac, said that he was surprised by his company?s finding, especially since a similar analysis in 2009 found that banks were attempting to sell nearly twice as much of their REO inventory back then.

?It was surprising to see that that percentage had come down,? he said, noting that many agents that his firm has spoken to ?have mentioned that there?s actually a shortage of foreclosure inventory ? and they?re wanting more.?

But Realtors who want more bargain-priced homes to sell may not get their way anytime soon.? Foreclosed properties are an extreme liability to lenders, holding the potential not just to dent their profits but to actually bankrupt them altogether.

That?s because when a lender carries an REO on its books, it is allowed to value the home at the price that the foreclosed-on borrower originally paid for it.? Once the lender sells the home, it must book a loss:? the difference between the original purchase price and the current value.? And since home values have fallen by nearly a third since the housing bust, that translates into huge losses for the bank.

?They?ve already taken a loss on the loan,? Khater said, ?but they?re going to take a loss on the asset once they dispose of it.?? Adding insult to injury, REOs typically sell at a 33 percent discount.

Fears of a Domino Effect

Releasing REOs onto the market also chips away at home prices in general, depressing the value of the homes of other customers ? who could already be teetering on the brink of foreclosure ? and the additional REOs that lenders hold on their books.

?Each REO that comes through has a domino impact on properties that are very close to that property,? Khater said.

In fact, if lenders turn their REO release valve to full blast, the deluge of foreclosures cascading onto the market could plunge the country into a recession, said Thomas Martin, president of consumer advocacy group Americas Watchdog.

?If they let the dam essentially break.? It could be a catastrophic disaster for the U.S. economy,? he said, predicting that some major banks would fail and home prices would nosedive by 20 percent.

That doomsday scenario has many industry professionals supporting lenders? tactics of holding onto most of their REOs.? Otherwise, they would be ?causing the floor to fall out from underneath the entire market,? Faranda said.? He added that banks don?t have the manpower to push the paperwork required to put all their foreclosures on the market.

Indeed, lenders couldn?t list all their REOs even if they wanted to. ?Fannie Mae, for one, reported in the first quarter of 2012 that it was unable to market 48 percent of its REO inventory because many of the homes were either still occupied, under repair or being rented.

Slowly Pulling Back the Band-Aid

Banks and investors will likely continue to withhold REOs until the market value of the properties appreciates, allowing them to sell the homes at higher prices.? And that may be a winning strategy.

Fannie Mae, which owned 114,000 foreclosed homes as of March 31, reported in the first quarter that there were ?improved sales prices on dispositions of our REO properties, resulting from strong demand in markets with limited REO supply.?

But at the same time, battening down REO inventory could prolong the housing slump, since the market must absorb the properties at some point anyway.

?As opposed to ripping off the Band-Aid quickly, it?s kind of slowly pulling back the Band-Aid,? Blomquist said.

Either way, he said, many lenders? REO-disposal tactics remain obscure, and that will continue to ?create a lot of uncertainty in the market.?

Missouri Catholic priest pleads guilty in child porn case

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A Kansas City Catholic priest pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges on Thursday, admitting to the crimes just weeks before he was scheduled to go on trial for taking sexually explicit photos of several young girls.

Shawn Ratigan, 46, pleaded guilty to four counts of producing child pornography and one count of attempting to produce child pornography using girls as young as 2 years old. The photos, taken with still cameras and a cell phone, included close-up pictures of the children's genitals. He faces 15-30 years in prison on each of the five counts, when sentenced at a later date.

Prosecutors said because of his guilty plea they would drop additional charges but said Ratigan would receive no other concession in exchange for his guilty plea.

"When a defendant who wears a religious collar who has the trust of a community engages in conduct of this nature his crimes are more devastating and more reprehensible," said David Ketchmark, acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. "He will face stiff mandatory penalties. He won't have an opportunity to harm another child."

Ketchmark said prosecutors would recommend a "virtual life sentence."

Clad in an orange jail suit and flanked by his attorneys, Ratigan showed no emotion when entering his guilty pleas and repeatedly admitted under questioning by the judge that he had produced child pornography using five girls from 2005 to 2009.

The actions took place at several locations - including a church choir loft, prosecutors said.

Ratigan's arrest last year rocked the Catholic community in Kansas City as he had been known by members of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph as a fun-loving priest who had a special fondness for recording children's parties and events with his camera.

Outrage grew when it became known that Bishop Robert Finn and other Diocese officials were aware of Ratigan's photos - found on his laptop computer - in December 2010, but failed to notify authorities for several months.

And though Finn ordered Ratigan to stay away from children, no warnings were issued to parents, and Ratigan did subsequently engage in activities with children before another Diocese official finally reported the situation to police in May 2011.

Both Finn and the Diocese are now facing criminal charges for failing to report the photos they found on Ratigan's laptop computer. Finn is the highest-ranking Catholic official to face criminal charges in connection with a sexual abuse case involving a priest.

The diocese and Finn have argued in court filings that there was no legal duty to report the photos, and also that the photographs did not constitute child pornography.

Family members for some of the victims were at the courthouse for Ratigan's plea. They issued a statement through their attorney Rebecca Randles.

"We are happy that this chapter is coming to a close without our children being identified or having to testify in the trial process," the statement said. "We are glad that Shawn Ratigan is taking ownership for his actions."

The case against Ratigan and the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City is one of several law enforcement actions against Catholic leaders around the country as efforts expand around the United States to hold Catholic leaders accountable for the child sexual abuse scandal that has roiled the church.

The efforts have been heightened by the scandal at Penn State University where former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

A South Boston priest was charged on Wednesday with possessing and distributing child pornography using a computer in his parish's rectory. Andrew Urbaniak, 39, was arraigned in South Boston District Court on one count of possession of child pornography and one charge of distributing images of a child in the nude, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

That followed the arrest in late July of a Roman Catholic priest in Philadelphia on charges that he sexually assaulted an altar boy in church in 1997.

That arrest, of suspended priest Andrew McCormick, 56, came only days after Monsignor William Lynn was sentenced to up to six years in prison for covering up child sex abuse by priests in Philadelphia.

Here's Why Apple's Advertising Is Suddenly An ... - Business Insider

One of the more famous quotes associated with the ad biz is the one Steve Jobs is reputed to have said to his ad agency early in the relationship?

?I want insanely great advertising.?

The agency in question was Chiat Day, long since swallowed up by BDA (Big Dumb Agency) TBWA, which was in turn swallowed up by BDHC (Big Dumb Holding Company) Omnicom.

Another famous ad quote was that of Jay Chiat, Co-Founder of Chiat day, who once said? ?I can?t wait to see how big we get before we turn to s**t!??Well, both guys eventually got their wish.

For years, Steve got advertising for Apple that was great, and then with 1984 for the launch of the Mac, it became insanely great.

At the same time, Jay was building an agency that was to become the envoy of the advertising business, doing consistently excellent work for a range of major clients as well as Apple.

Then in 2002, Jay died.

Unfortunately, since its acquisition by Omnicom, and merger with TBWA in 1995 the work had already started to suffer, as in common with all agencies belonging to holding companies which are invariably run by bean counters, the bottom line had become more important than the quality of the work.

However, that was with the exception of the Apple account, for which Chiat continued to turn out terrific work. Why? Simple, Steve was still signing off on the advertising. And anyone who?s ever worked with Steve will tell you that as an acknowledged control freak, he would kill anyone suggesting he rely on third party boiler plate research, focus groups, datametrics and all the other bulls**t agencies love to bombard clients with. Steve relied strictly on his gut. And Steve?s gut was invariably right.

Then in 2011, Steve died.

And Apple?s advertising is now an unmitigated disaster. The new?TV campaign features an ?Apple Genius??showing people on airplanes, on the street, and about to give birth, how to use their Macs. Firstly, they have achieved the impossible by creating a clone of the??Dell Dude,??only worse.

This guy sleeps in his Apple store tee shirt and name tag, and is the kind of weasel you want to punch in the face. At least the ?Dell Dude??was weird in a funny way. Remember,?he got arrested?in the west Village for trying to score weed from an undercover cop? And, at the time (2 AM in the morning) he was wearing a kilt!

Somehow or other, I don?t think the ?Apple Genius??could score itching powder in a joke store. Anyway, the really important point is that Apple has invested years and millions of dollars hammering home the proposition that Apple stuff is so intuitive, you just switch it on and instantly become Leonardo Da Vinci. The last thing you need is the "Apple Genius"?looking over your shoulder.

Whoever is responsible for this should realize that Steve is sat on his iCloud watching them right now? And he doesn?t think this is insanely great!

The Moral: Without the original visionary in charge? Jay?s prophesy always comes true.
