CONIFER, Colo. (AP) ? Crews building the last few miles of fire lines to contain a wildfire southwest of Denver were expected to face warm temperatures and gusty afternoon winds Saturday.

So far, firefighters have contained about 90 percent of the 6-square-mile wildfire, which was apparently sparked by a state controlled burn that sprang to life Monday in strong winds. The fire damaged or destroyed at least 25 homes, and residents of about 180 homes remain evacuated.

Jefferson County has tightened its fire restrictions to temporarily ban anything producing an open flame in unincorporated parts of the county, including federal land.

On Saturday morning, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office used an automated call system to warn residents of about 500 homes that gusty winds and dry conditions mean they could be asked to evacuate at a moment's notice.

After the fire started, sheriff's officials alerted people to evacuate via the call system, but authorities have said about 12 percent of the people they intended to notify didn't get a warning. Sheriff's spokesman Mark Techmeyer said some people likely hung up after hearing a pause that precedes the automated message, or their phone lines may have been busy.

He said that can happen in any emergency, but authorities were most concerned that there wasn't any attempt to reach an unknown number of additional people registered to get the telephone alerts.

"We want to get to the bottom of this as much as our citizens do," Techmeyer said Friday.

The company that handles the system, Baton Rouge, La.-based FirstCall Network Inc., said it worked exactly as it should have. FirstCall provides the alert service to as many as 200 agencies nationwide.

"I know that everyone who opted in got the call," FirstCall President Mark Teague said Friday. "We're working closely with (county officials) trying to get them all the information they need."

FirstCall's system is set up to call three times at three-minute intervals if a phone line is busy, Teague said. Local agencies can change that if they wish and can decide what message appears on a recipient's telephone if it has caller ID. Jefferson County's system also sends text messages, FirstCall said.

Monday's calls went out in two waves. The first included people outside the evacuation area and even outside Colorado, Techmeyer said. He didn't know the times of the calls.

Sheriff's officials said a couple found dead in the fire zone got a call, as did a woman who remains missing, but it wasn't immediately clear when the calls came.

Rescuers were still searching for Ann Appel, reported missing since Monday, while a memorial service was held Friday for Sam Lamar Lucas, 77, and Linda M. Lucas, 76.

There have been other concerns about the response to the fire.

Elk Creek Fire Protection District Chief Bill McLaughlin told KUSA-TV in Denver that state firefighters were using a different radio frequency than local firefighters after flames were spotted, and agencies were driving back and forth for about an hour to relay messages.

McLaughlin later started using two radios, with one tuned to each frequency, KUSA reported.

On Friday, the Colorado State Forest Service released its plan for the controlled burn, showing that planners acknowledged there was a potential for fires to escape and cause a "significant threat" to nearby homes.

However, officials thought it was more likely they'd be able to put out any fire before it got that far, partly because of crews and water on site. Officials who wrote the plan insisted that the forest thinning would help protect those homes from a potential wildfire in the future.

The plan dates from 2006 and covers a series of burns being done in the area for Denver Water.

Under the plan, nearby residents were supposed to get warning letters. The state Forest Service has refused to say if that happened, citing an independent review into the burn. Two residents who lost their homes have said they didn't get the letters.

Gov. John Hickenlooper has suspended prescribed burns on state land, and the U.S. Forest Service has suspended six planned burns in Colorado until the weather improves. Several Colorado counties have enacted fire restrictions.

This March has been unusually dry, but a cold front promised to bring relief late Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Lisa Kriederman said.

Crews have been restoring power in the fire zone, and an overnight shelter closed as residents tried to return to normal Friday.

Bill Suvada Jr. said he returned home Thursday but was keeping his car packed in case he has to flee again.

"It was a long night of wondering," Suvada said of his first night home.

Jill Owens remembered rushing with her husband, two kids and animals to leave their home shortly after 5 p.m. Monday as smoke crept closer. She later noticed a text message on her cellphone with an evacuation notice from sheriff's officials at 5:08 p.m. She never got a warning call on her land line. She guesses her house burned about 15 minutes after her family left.

She and her husband learned from watching television Tuesday that their house was gone.

"You never think it's actually going to happen," she said. "I wish I would've stopped and looked back at the house one last time."

How I gained it: When I was younger, I ate all the time. Food was always around, and it was yummy. I was active, and I burned it off. But I remember my mom and grandma slapping my hand when I went for the second cupcake and saying things like, ?Don?t eat that, you?re already too big.?

As an adult, I enjoyed going out to eat, and I was apathetic because I was already overweight. I just thought, ?I?m already big, I might as well have the cheese fondue!? As a Nurse Practitioner, you would think I would know better, but book smarts and street smarts are different. So I resolved myself to just be happy, and I thought I was.

Breaking point: When my daughter was one year old, I started to have some health issues. When I look back at my pictures now, I see how much weight I was carrying, but at the time, I thought I looked the same as when I was a freshman in college. I was overweight, but not ?obese.?

Around that time, I had several doctor visits to clear up some GI issues that would just not go away. The third doctor repeated what I?d heard from the others: ?We can help you, but you also have to help yourself. You must lose weight.? I sat in the car crying for thirty minutes afterward, then during my drive home, I made a decision: I would help myself.

How I lost it: I called Jenny Craig from the car after my doctor?s appointment. I was nervous, but they were so lovely and wonderful. I?d tried other weight loss plans before, and I wasn?t a fan of going into a place and raising my hand to talk. I liked that I could do Jenny Direct at home, and it wasn?t a diet. It?s a lifestyle change: Food, body, mind. It helped me to learn a different lifestyle.

I have a young daughter, and I know that young girls can have a lot of food issues, so I never wanted to use the D-word around my daughter. I tell her that we eat ?healthy food? instead.

Now he relaxes, and I ride the bike, usually six or seven times a week.

And every Thursday night, I talk to my consultant Bridgette. That?s another reason Jenny Direct really worked for me: Life happens, but every week, Bridgette calls me to give me positive energy. She supported me through the entire weight loss process and now she?s helping me adapt to maintenance.

I had two long-term goals when I started: I desperately wanted to have a normal BMI since my starting BMI was 44.8 (which technically meant I was ?morbidly obese?). I also wanted to find a cute matching outfit for my daughter and me to wear. When I finally made it to goal, I had to purchase a child-sized dress for myself because I?m so petite. Record jackpot as Mega Millions hits $500 million

The Mega Millions jackpot?reached a record $500 million -- pre-tax -- after no one picked all six numbers correctly Tuesday night. The jackpot had been at $476 million soon after the drawing, and by Wednesday morning had grown by $24 million.

The next drawing is this Friday, and any winner would be able to take that amount over time or an immediate cash payout of $359 million.

Tuesday's winning numbers were: 9 - 19 - 34 - 44 - 51, with the mega number 24.

Five of the six winning numbers were picked by?47 players, who each won $250,000.

Notre Dame football: Lynch strikes a balance to up his game

SOUTH BEND - The traces of an old school soul are so much more obvious now.
Aaron Lynch no longer has to be talked into playing within the
structure of Notre Dame?s defense. The sophomore-to-be defensive end
now preaches it.
He basks in the pride that his single mom, Alice, taught him to play
football. He perceives that All-America linebacker Manti Te?o is every
bit as valuable as a mentor as he is a teammate.
And that Vince Lombardi quote that?s been tattooed on his right
forearm since his sophomore year at Island Coast High School in Cape
Coral, Fla.? It?s finally become more mantra than wishful thinking.
?Football is like life ? it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard
work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.?
It?s not that the 6-foot-6, 270-pounder has moved completely beyond
that raw edginess that resulted in bulletin board fodder for upcoming
opponent Pitt during the only in-season interview he was allowed to do
and materialized in a cascade of penalty flags on the field throughout
a freshman All-America season.
But there?s a synthesis now, a harmony between havoc and discipline

?Actually, I did surprise myself,? Lynch said of the comfortable fit,
especially academically. ?I didn?t think I was going to do as well as
I?m doing.?
Some of that has to do with Alice Lynch. She packed up her life a few
months after her son enrolled at ND last January and resettled in
Ohio, about a three-hour drive from South Bend.
?She gets to come to every game, and I get to go home every weekend,?
Lynch said. ?And she?s an amazing cook.?
She is also an amazing football presence ? one of many voices that
continue to push Lynch beyond simply his breathtaking innate physical
abilities.
?I like getting pushed,? he said. ?I feel like no one has to push me,
because I push myself. But I like getting pushed by other people. I
like coach (Brian Kelly) yelling at me. I don?t have a problem with
that. I don?t have a problem with the guys yelling at me. It?s fine.
It just makes me push even more.?
Perhaps his most impressive push was being at his best in the final 4?
games of the season while playing with an ankle injury suffered Nov. 5
at Wake Forest.
?It was painful but then again you?ve got to do it,? he said. ?I
certainly wasn?t going to let an ankle keep me out of the game.?
Lynch finished the 2011 season with 33 tackles, more than half of
those coming after the ankle sprain. He also had seven tackles for
loss, a team-leading 5? sacks, a forced fumble and two pass breakups.
His 14 quarterback hurries were the most by an Irish defender since
the school began charting the stat in 1998.
?If you don?t play with intensity and with a passion,? he said, ?then
you shouldn?t be on the field.?
Classmate and bookend defensive end Stephon Tuitt feeds that passion.
He too somehow transcended seemingly unfairly high expectations last
season and channeled the growing pains into quantum leaps of progress.
?We both have the same mind-set,? Lynch said of his 6-6, 295-pound
counterpart. ?We want to play. We want to help out the team. We both
have an intensity to go out there and kill. That?s how we get along.?
That?s not to say the rough edges will ever completely disappear from
Lynch?s game.
?The thing is, honestly, every year I?m going to get some yellow
flags, because that?s the way I play football,? he said. ?That?s my
intensity. It happens. I?m not going to go intentionally do it, but
the next 2-3-4 years I?m going to get more yellow flags.?
Indeed, it?s part of the big picture who Aaron Lynch is, but the
swirls around it are so much sharper in focus, so much more in
balance, so much more the vision Kelly saw when he wrestled Lynch away
from Florida State in the 11th hour of the 2011 recruiting cycle.
Lynch, in turn, already has a clear vision for what his life at ND
away from football will look like. He wants to major in literature and
poetry. He says the poems he writes for his girlfriend are the same
ones that earn him A?s in the classroom.
Now he?s ready to write the next chapter on the field as well.
?We want to be the No. 1 defense in the country,? he said. ?Last year
was a great ride. Really, it was fun. I got to play. I got to help out
my team. That?s what I came here to do. But now I want more.
?I know my talents and I know what I can do. I wouldn?t have been
recruited by ND if I wasn?t that guy.?

NYON, Switzerland (AP) -Barcelona and Real Madrid were kept apart in the Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals draw Friday, though the defending champion must first beat AC Milan before the Spanish giants can hope to meet in a potentially stellar final.

Barcelona will travel for the first leg against seven-time winner Milan, in a quarterfinals clash that reunites the two European powers after they met in the group stage.

Madrid, the nine-time winner, got the most favorable draw ? playing away first against the competition?s surprise team APOEL of Cyprus.

Chelsea will play away to Benfica first in their quarterfinal. Marseille was drawn at home first against Bayern Munich, which hosts the final on May 19.

Quarterfinals first-leg matches are played on March 27-28, and return matches are on April 3-4.

In the subsequent semifinals draw, Marseille or Bayern will host APOEL or Madrid in the first leg.

Benfica or Chelsea will play at home first against Milan or Barcelona. Semifinals first legs are played on April 17-18 and return matches on April 24-25.

Barcelona had the best of Milan in the group stage, drawing 2-2 at home before winning 3-2 in a high-class encounter at San Siro.

?It is a psychological advantage,? said Barcelona director Amador Bernabeu, anticipating another meeting with Milan?s former Barca forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic. ?But to play Ibra is another thing. We respect him all the time.?

A new lifestyle-inspired iOS wallpaper app, Paper?d, is available Monday, offering free, professionally designed wallpapers based on everything from pop culture to worldwide travel.

The app was created by two best friends Jamie Varon and Nicole Antoinette. You may remember Varon from 2009 when she created the website TwitterShouldHireMe.com. The site got a ton of attention, which ultimately led her to create the high-end boutique web design company Shatterboxx in April of that year.

A few months after creating Shatterboxx she stumbled upon now business-partner Antoinette?s blog, reached out to her on Twitter, and the two became friends. Fast forward to December 2009, the Twitter buddies finally met in San Francisco, decided to move in together 24 hours later, and within a few weeks Antoinette became the other half of the Shatterboxx team.

Shatterboxx has done design work for a number of popular blogs including TheBloggess and Rocket Shoes, but this is its first introduction into the app world.

?I always wanted to change the wallpaper on my phone. I would look all over the Internet for options, and they were all on websites. That?s so inefficient,? Varon told Mashable. She found that most wallpaper options were also just curated pictures from the web. ?None of it meets the quality of what I?d want to put on my phone,? she said.

The project started out as creating wallpapers for her personal use that she would also share with friends. When her friends started emailing her asking for new wallpapers, Varon realized that there might be a larger market for the designs.
